מטרת המאמר להראות מהם המשתנים (הבלתי תלויים) העיקריים, שנמצאו קשורים להופעה של התנהגות עבריינית וסוטה (משתנים תלויים), בקרב צעירים יוצאי אתיופיה בישראל. כמו-כן, מציג המאמר תמונת מצב של שיעורי הפשיעה של בני-נוער יוצאי העדה, כפועל יוצא של תהליך קליטתם בישראל, נכון לסוף שנות ה - 90'. שתי השערות למחקר: האחת - מציאת קשר בין גיל האב המהגר לבין היחלשות יכולתו לשגר נורמות רלוונטיות לילדיו, כמו-גם יכולתו לפקח על התנהגותם של ילדיו המתבגרים. ההשערה השנייה הייתה, שחוסר תפקוד
המאמר מבוסס על מחקר מקיף בנושא שימוש בחומרים פסיכואקטיביים בקרב בני נוער יוצאי אתיופיה, שנערך מטעם הרשות למלחמה בסמים ומשרד הקליטה. הוא מציג את הנתונים העקריים שנמצאו ומנסה לבחון אותם על רקע מצוקתה של העדה האתיופית מבחינה כלכלית, חברתית ותרבותית בישראל. הממצאים נבחנים גם בהשוואה לממצאי סקרים קודמים שנערכו על בני נוער וותיקים: לומדים ומנותקים. בנוסף בוחן המאמר, באיזו מידה יכולים המשתנים הבלתי תלויים, המסבירים שימוש בחומרים פסיכואקטיביים, לשמש גם להסבר עבריינות נוער בקרב בני העדה.
